The Ashura event led to the development of a religious discourse and ideology, which, while condemning the tyrannical ruler, presented the duties and characteristics of the Imam as the leader of the people. This discourse emphasized the participation and responsibility of the people in relation to the ruling regime through awareness-raising and enlightenment. Such a discourse was fundamentally in contrast to the discourse of the ruling regime. The discord between these discourses created the necessary context for the discursive confrontation between Imam Hussein and Yazid in their letters.
The following article attempts to address, using the discourse analysis method of Laclau and Mouffe, which views discourse beyond linguistic structure in political, social, and cultural fields, the following questions: How was the discursive confrontation between Imam Hussein and Yazid represented in Yazid's letters to his governors and Imam Hussein's letters to the people of Kufa? What central points and surrounding signifiers did each discourse use to establish meaning and hegemonize their own discourse?
The research findings indicate that Yazid, by using the theory of divine caliphate, attempted, by any means possible, to bring Imam Hussein as a religious reference figure to his side and strengthen the legitimacy of his rule. However, Imam Hussein , by rejecting such a demand, emphasized the religious reform of the regime. The result of this thinking in their letters revealed a justice-oriented discourse based on true Islam, in contrast to Yazid's power-driven objectives based on a deviant version of Islam.
